Lab News: CellTec Bioreactor Solves Scaling Problem

One of the central challenges of industrial cell proliferation lies in the availability of a scalable reactor for surface-growing cells. The patented reactor process from CellTec proliferates almost any non-modified cells and simultaneously solves the scaling problem. The underlying process is scientifically proven and ready for laboratory use. The reactor currently under development will add scaling as well as industrially usable plant technologies.

The coming years will be crucial for the industrial application of biological cell proliferation. Today, there are already many possible applications, such as in the food industry or for medical purposes. Some approaches use modified cells, for example, through genetic alterations with the CRISPR/Cas method. The technology we apply takes a different approach. It is a universal (multi-use) process, which can achieve cell proliferation comprehensibly and reliably. And this also applies to so-called adherently growing cells, which depend on the attachment to surfaces. Thus, the production chain up to the gentle extraction is defined, manageable, and can be well understood.

    Pioneering Hydrogel Process

    Our patented reactor process allows the proliferation of any non-modified cells and through cyclic production steps, also in significant quantities. So far, this has only been possible to a very limited extent on solid surfaces, thus hardly scalable in quantity. The hydrogel we developed can also be used in food production in principle. Its properties make it ideal for this application: it provides a high surface area required for adherent growing cells, protects the cells from the shear forces present in all bioreactors, and allows cell nourishment through diffusion. The process is based on various international patents and provides CellTec Systems with a promising starting position in the competitive market of mass cell proliferation facilities.

    Universally and Versatilely Applicable

    “Our procedure can be universally applied by customers to a broad range of cells. This not only saves a lot of time but also money due to the elimination of the otherwise necessary customization of single-use reactors,” describes Head of Process Development Marc Lehr the advantages of the CellTec process. “Combined with multimodal cell differentiation, in this way, raw materials composed of different cell types can already be produced, which in further steps can be processed into usable end products such as cultured meat in downstream operations.”
